Economical 4wd

The Volkswagen Tiguan is a very economical 4wd that in official U.K. fuel economy testing was able to return 45 miles per gallon for city driving, 59 mpg for motorway driving and 53 mpg combined.

A high tech 2.0 diesel TDI powerplant delivers this outstanding fuel economy but it doesn't lack any power either. The engine delivers satisfying acceleration and punch throughout the whole rev range. Its important when creating an economical 4wd that the car is not left underpowered otherwise its offroad ability will be severely compromised. VW have done a fine job of the balancing act.

Although the Tiguan has permanent four wheel drive the car cleverly sends 90% of the power to the front wheels under standard driving conditions to increase fuel mileage. When required up to 50% of the available power can be diverted to the rear wheels.

Considering the Volkswagen Tiguan is primarily designed for city streets it performs very well off road. Besides standard traction control you also get an electronic differential lock for difficult off road conditions. The standard Tiguan handles an 18 degree angle of approach however there is an Escape model which has further features for keen off roaders including a 28 degree angle of approach. Other features of the Escape model include a greater wading depth, hill descent assist and a stronger front grille.

The Tiguan economical 4wd is a competent performer on road as well as off. It's engaging and enjoyable to drive with good grip and little body roll when you push harder. The driving position is very comfortable for long journeys and the controls are all well laid out and easy to use.

The VW Tiguan is part of the expanding small 4wd market but it demonstrates that cabins in these vehicles can still be very spacious. The interior is practical and roomy. Rear passengers should be more than satisfied with the amount of legroom. Thoughtful touches like the fold down tables on the back of the front seats add to the appeal of the Tiguan's interior.

In summary what we have here is yet another well engineered car from VW. It's a practical family car that won't break the bank and should be very reliable. The Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the best economical 4wd cars.
