Volvo are producing some very economical cars with 3 making it on to the family car list and one the clear winner of this category. They also won the small car category with the C30.

Volvo V50

The most economical family car is the Volvo V50.

The V50 makes use of Volvo's excellent DRIVe Start/Stop technology. No heavy and expensive hybrid system is required to deliver its outstanding fuel mileage, although there is one small additional battery to keep you cool at the traffic lights when the engine stops.

The V50 DRIVe has slightly lower suspension than other versions of the V50. This is to help lower its drag coefficient. Other features that aid fuel consumption include aerodynamic alloys, low rolling resistance tyres and long gearbox ratios.
