Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5 is the most economical sports car you can buy in the U.S.

Sometimes referred to as the poor mans Ferrari, the MX-5 has been thrilling its owners since 1989 with its incredible handling, which is sometimes likened to that of the Italian supercar giant.

Its high fuel efficiency is in large part due to one of the reasons it handles so well - its a very lightweight car. It also has a relatively small engine.
But don't think the small engine means its slow... since the power to weight ratio is so good the MX-5 reaches 60 mph in only 6.5 seconds.
